Steve Winwood - "Don't You Know What The Night Can Do?"

Please don't misunderstand me...I really like Steve Winwood's music.  I do.  That being said, every song he produced during the 1980s is about three minutes too long (see: "Higher Love", "While You See A Chance", and "Roll With It").  In the case of "Don't You Know What The Night Can Do", Steve finds a groove and then repeats it over and over and over.  Is it possible that his contact contained a clause where they paid him by the length of each song?
