How do you become the #1 Billboard Adult Contemporary Song of all-time? Just ask Savage Garden as the Australian group released "Truly Madly Deeply" in 1997 yet the infectious ballad never fell off the Hot Adult Contemporary Recurrents Chart until June of 2006.

Don Henley infamously said The Eagles would only reunite when "hell freezes over." One could argue Darren Hayes of Savage Garden made as strong of a statement when asked if the Australian Pop group would ever reunite. Hayes said, "I'd only do it if it cured cancer." Despite hell not freezing over, The Eagles reunited in 1994. As of  today, Savage Garden has not reunited and cancer has not been cured.

The list of Australian artists who also found success in the US is limited: INXS, AC/DC, Men at Work, and Savage Garden are some that come to mind.  Pop singer Merrill Bainbridge briefly tasted success with "Mouth" in 1996 -- nearly two years after the release of the single.

Savage Garden - "Crash and Burn"

The Australian duo Savage Garden held a fierce grip on the Adult Contemporary Chart in 2000 thanks to "I Knew I Loved You".  The ballad spent a whopping 124 weeks on the Hot Adult Contemporary Charts (spanning more than two years!).  That was exactly one additional week than their previous ballad, "Truly Madly Deeply", hung around the chart.  Good luck topping that!  "Crash and Burn" was the duo's next single and, unlike the name implied, the song proved to be a success reaching #10 on the Adult Contemporary Chart.  While that feat was nowhere near the success of "I Knew I Loved You" or "Truly Madly Deeply", the song topped the charts in several other countries.  FUN FACT: The "B" side to the "Crash and Burn" was a song called "Two Beds and a Coffee Machine".

Savage Garden - "To The Moon and Back"

Sometimes a record label tries more than once to make a song a hit.  In the case of Savage Garden, the group had a hit with "I Want You" in 1996.  The follow-up single was "To The Moon and Back" which barely cracked the Pop Charts.  Then came the band's huge "Truly, Madly, Deeply" which at the time (1997) set the record for the longest-running #1 AC hit.  So, the record company re-released "To The Moon and Back" in 1998 and the song proved to be more successful than before.
