Whitney Houston "I Will Always Love You"

Whitney Houston never planned to cover Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" for The Bodyguard Soundtrack. Instead, she planned to sing "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted", but reversed course when she heard Paul Young was doing a version for Fried Green Tomatoes. Since Houston had complete creative control over which songs made the movie, she resumed her hunt for a different song. Credit her co-star Kevin Costner for suggesting she choose "I Will Always Love You". The song went on to become one of the biggest hits of 1992 and 1993 -- spending an astounding 14 weeks atop the Hot 100 Chart. I still remember hearing the song at every school dance and on nearly every contemporary radio station in Chicago. The Bodyguard Soundtrack went on to be the best-selling soundtrack of all-time and, when Whitney died, Dolly Parton quoted lyrics from the ballad in praise of Whitney: "I will always be grateful and in awe of the wonderful performance she did on my song and I can truly say from the bottom of my heart, 'Whitney, I will always love you. You will be missed.'" 

Dolly Parton "9 to 5"

That typewriter you hear in Dolly Parton's 1980 hit "9 to 5" isn't a typewriter at all. It's actually the sound of Dolly's acrylic fingernails running back and forth over one another.

Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton "Islands in the Stream"

The Bee Gees wrote "Islands in the Stream" with Marvin Gaye in mind, but they took a left turn and turned it into one of the most successful country ballads of all time thanks to Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. The duet "Islands in the Stream" topped the Country, Adult Contemporary, and Hot 100 in 1983.

Some fun facts about Dolly Parton's signature tune "Jolene":

• Released in 1973, the song details Dolly's fear that an attractive bank clerk was trying to woo away her husband
• Much like Barry Manilow inspired a generation of girls named Mandy, Dolly did the same thing with "Jolene"
• Miley Cyrus (who is Parton's goddaughter) is one of the many artists to remake the song
• Dolly's original version was nominated for two Grammys in 1974, but she did not win either
• "Jolene" earned Dolly a Grammy 44 years after its original release thanks to her backing up the group Pentatonix in a remake of the tune
• Several artists penned songs in response to "Jolene" including Kirstie MacColl's "Caroline" and Jennifer Nettles' "That Girl"

USELESS TRIVIA:

In 1980, Eddie Rabbit's "I Love A Rainy Night" knocked Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" out of the #1 spot.  This was the first and only time two country songs were back-to-back #1 hits on the Hot 100 Chart.
