Long before R.E.M.'s "Man on the Moon", Poco reached the Top 10 with "Shoot for the Moon" in 1982 -- a song guaranteed to put a grin on the face of any Yacht Rocker.

R.E.M. "Losing My Religion"

R.E.M. churned out a hit alternative rock song in 1991 that featured a mandolin. The band's guitarist, Peter Buck, turned out a set of unforgettable chords on the mandolin while Michael Stipe sang lyrics to the song that resulted in the band's signature tune, "Losing My Religion". Once known as simply a college campus favorite, the album Out of Time and, specifically, "Losing My Religion" helped R.E.M. crossed over onto mainstream radio.

R.E.M. "Man on the Moon"

If you believe they put a man on the moon, you'll likely question why Wikipedia classifies R.E.M.'s "Man on the Moon" as a country rock song.  The audio tribute to Andy Kaufman spent time on Top 40 as well as Rock and Alternative radio stations in the 90s, but I don't think any country radio stations touched it.
