Backstreet Boys "Incomplete"

The Backstreet Boys are the best-selling boy band in the world and the only boy band to top the US Charts three decades in a row. Their 2019 album DNA provided the band with another #1 album. Despite growing up as boys in the mid-'90s to family men in the 2000s, the Backstreet Boys refused to change the name of their band to simply "Backstreet".

'N-SYNC "Gone"

Weeks of a rumored format-flip culminated into a staff meeting one afternoon at the radio station. Management told the sales and programming staffs to meet in the conference room at 3:00 P.M for an announcement -- some folks weren't as lucky. They were invited to an earlier meeting at 2:00 P.M. where they were fired. I mistakenly figured this out when I arrived early for the 3 P.M. meeting and noticed both desks of my colleagues were emptied. All the papers pinned to their bulletin board: gone. All their personal items (photographs, press credentials, and fan mail): gone. The radio station did flip formats that following day resulting in half the air staff being dismissed. The lesson I learned that day: it's never a good thing to be invited to the meeting before the meeting.

Gloria Estefan & 'N-Sync "Music of My Heart"

Adult Contemporary stalwart Gloria Estefan teamed up with (arguably) the hottest boy band at the close of the 20th Century to record the radio-friendly ballad "Music of My Heart". Pulled from the soundtrack of the movie with the same name, the song found a home all across the radio dial. The wildly successful tune snagged two Grammy nominations, an Academy Award nomination and peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary Charts in 1999.

98 Degrees "My Everything"

Boy bands don't tend to get the respect they might deserve. Take a look at Nick Lachey of 98 Degrees. Lachey not only sang in the band's 2000 ballad "My Everything", but he also was one of the song's co-writers. Not just a pretty face, folks...

All-4-One "I Swear"

I'll never understand how a country artist (John Michael Montgomery) and an R&B boy band (All-4-One) released two of the same songs ("I Swear" and "I Can Love You Like That") and both managed to score hits within a year of each other.

98 Degrees - "Invisible Man"

You can very easily sum up 90's boy band pop with one listen to 98 Degrees "Invisible Man".  Despite being a Top 40 hit, the song only spent four short weeks on the Adult Contemporary Chart.

BBMak - "Back Here"

British boy band BBMak derived their name using the first letters of the last names of the singers: Mark Barry, Christian Burns, and Stephen McNally.

O-Town "All or Nothing"

Friday nights in 2000 featured ABC-TV's "Making The Band"--a reality show that showed the followed the making of (Ponzi schemer) Lou Pearlman's latest boy band venture, O-Town.  I clearly didn't have a life because I remember religiously tuning in each Friday night to see whether Ikaika would stay with the band or return to Hawaii.  Pearlman now sits in prison, Ikaika now runs a fitness website, and O-Town (somewhat) reunited as part of a concert series that also features 98 Degrees.
