Think back to your first teacher crush...I'd have to give that award to my music teacher Miss Piercy (who later married and became Mrs. Berg). For TV's Kevin Arnold (of The Wonder Years) it was Miss White (who later married and became Mrs. Heimer). Kevin crushed on her throughout middle school and even became jealous when he overheard his dad talking with her one afternoon after school during play practice. On Kevin's graduation day from ninth grade, he shared a moment with his favorite female teacher...until her water broke. He ultimately drove her to the hospital despite being unlicensed and unfamiliar with driving a manual transmission. Actress Wendel Meldrum played Miss White / Mrs. Heimer during The Wonder Years, but a few years later cemented her status in pop culture. Meldrum appeared as Leslie "The Low Talker" on a Seinfeld episode called "The Puffy Shirt".
Phil Collins, Elton John, and Gloria Estefan dominated Adult Contemporary radio back in the 1980s and '90s, yet have disappeared from modern radio. Seemingly, the only time you ever hear them is at the grocery store or your local CVS. This blog remembers the music, the stories and the quirky characters from my days working in Adult Contemporary radio.

Bob Seger "We've Got Tonite"
It all begins when Kevin sees Winnie standing in front of her old house on his street. Winnie then peppers Kevin with questions about the new family that moved into her old house. Later, she again shows up at Kevin's house unannounced and asks Kevin to talk, but then doesn't really talk about anything beyond pleasantries. The young Miss Cooper also keeps fraternizing with 11th graders at the roller rink--much to Kevin's chagrin. Every time Kevin approaches Winnie, he senses she's bothered and seems out of place. Ultimately her hanging out with older dudes leads to her involvement in a car accident where she breaks her leg. Once Kevin learns of Winnie's injuries, he rushes to be with her. The problem is: she doesn't want to see him. After Winnie's parents shoo Kevin away, Kevin pretends to leave but then embraces his inner Romeo and climbs onto the Cooper's roof to see his Juliet. As he reaches Winnie's second-floor bedroom window, he watches as Winnie's mom tucks Winnie into bed. After she exits her bedroom, Winnie finally notices Kevin's face pasted to her bedroom window. After an awkward moment of staring, Kevin mouths. "I love you" to Winnie...who reciprocates. *Swoon* All the while, Bob Seger's "We've Got Tonite" plays the episode to a close.
More changes are in store for these young teenagers as, two episodes later, Kevin and Winnie graduate from middle school and in the fall will begin Season Five of The Wonder Years reunited in high school.

The Stylistics "You Are Everything"
During Season 4, Winnie's family moved a few miles away which sent Winnie to a new school and put her and Kevin's relationship to the test. During a field trip that both schools attended, Winnie revealed to Kevin that she has a new love interest and dumped him. What a great field trip! Before climbing aboard the bus for the sad ride back to his school, Kevin finds the ring he once purchased for Winnie sitting all by its lonesome. Seeing it made the uncomfortable title of "Winnie's ex" a reality.
An episode later, still in denial over his breakup, Kevin convinces his best friend Paul Pfeiffer to host a party in hopes of wooing back Winnie. Paul reluctantly agrees. Winnie and her new boyfriend attend Paul's shindig as does Kevin and his date Madeline (who has flirted with Kevin throughout Season 4). At the party, Kevin works overtime to convince Winnie that he's doing just fine, thank you very much, but no one is buying it. Not Paul, not Madeline, and definitely not Winnie. He eventually puts himself in a timeout and adjourns to the nearby laundry room in Paul's basement when Winnie enters. In an effort to melt the ice, she tells Kevin she needs him to be her friend. Feeling jaded, Kevin tells Winnie he's not her friend and lashes out at her...all the while The Stylistics' "You Are Everything" further paints the picture throughout the scene. After Winnie leaves in tears, Kevin goes home where he finds his dad in the garage. In a tender moment that hits too close to home, Kevin breaks down in front of his usually stoic dad, Jack. Not mincing words, Jack says, "I wish I could say it gets easier."
The episode concludes on Winnie's front porch with a disappointing conclusion where Kevin went to apologize. All the emotion from the previous scene completely drained from the episode when Winnie easily accepted Kevin's apology. Kevin's inner-monologue reveals that his and Winnie's relationship has changed and will never be the same. The narrator ends by saying, "Maybe we weren't the same two kids we'd once been...and even though I didn't know what was gonna happen to us...I just knew I couldn't let her out of my life."
Some things last. And even though I didn't know what was gonna happen to us or where we were going I just knew I couldn't let her out of my life. Read more: https://www.springfieldspringfield.co.uk/view_episode_scripts.php?tv-show=the-wonder-years&episode=s04e12
