Starship "It's Not Enough"

The answer to why Starship didn't have a major hit after 1989's "It's Not Enough" is simple: following a 1989 concert in Pennsylvania, the group's lead singer Mickey Thomas got into a fight with drummer Donny Baldwin. Thomas, who replaced Grace Slick, was injured so badly that he needed facial surgery that required two titanium plates being implanted into his skull. This forced the band to postpone future shows and, thus, killed any momentum for the band's popularity. The band hasn't charted a Top 40 hit since.

Starship "Set The Night to Music"

A handful of years before Maxi Priest and Roberta Flack turned "Set the Night to Music" into a hit, Starship did the same. The ballad featured Grace Slick on vocals in what would be her last album with Starship.

Starship - "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now"

Why, yes, there was a movie made in the '80s about a guy who worked at a department store and fell in love with an ever-desirable mannequin.  Sex & The City's Kim Cattrall played the mannequin opposite Andrew McCarthy (and even Estelle Getty made an appearance) in the movie that screams "the 1980s!".  Somehow the movie found its name in the running for an Academy Award in 1988...but, let's be clear, it had nothing to do with this silly movie.  The theme song to this theatrical masterpiece was Starship's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" which scored an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.

Far superior to Starship's "We Built This City" was Jefferson Starship's "Find Your Way Back".

Robert Flack & Maxi Priest - "Set The Night to Music"

Plenty of songs still exist from the lost Adult Contemporary radio years that should have be locked up and never played again.  Roberta Flack & Maxi Priest's duet "Set The Night To Music" is not one of them.  This particular song is the '90s equivalent to Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing."  Less obvious than "Sexual Healing", "Set The Night To Music" is a whispery-soft romantic ballad that gently leads you to the bedroom to partake in adult activities.      

Starship - "Sara"

It's hard to believe that the group Jefferson Airplane (then "Jefferson Starship" and later just "Starship") scored big hits with both "Somebody to Love" and "We Built This City on Rock & Roll."  The band did a 180 in the '80s when singer Grace Slick stepped into the background and a softer Adult Contemporary sound was born.  Starship found us somebody to love and that was "Sara" thanks to their 1986 hit.
