Dan Hartman - "I Can Dream About You"

Could you hear Hall & Oates singing Dan Hartman's "I Can Dream About You"?  Well, Hartman could.  He wrote the song and presented it to the duo only to be told "thanks, but no thanks."  Hall & Oates had just put the finishing touches on an album and didn't have use for it.  So, Hartman recorded and released the song himself.  The result: a Top 10 song in 1984.
