It's another case of "Lowered Expectations": as the guys behind Tears for Fears put the finishing touches on their Songs From the Big Chair album, they opted to cut a song from the album they felt wasn't all that good. They decided to replace it with "Everybody Wants to Rule the World". Despite being an after-thought, the song proved to be the English band's biggest hit and one of the biggest hits of the decade.
Phil Collins, Elton John, and Gloria Estefan dominated Adult Contemporary radio back in the 1980s and '90s, yet have disappeared from modern radio.
