Hootie & The Blowfish "Hold My Hand"

Let's take a look at the top songs of 1994 on Top 40 radio:

By 1994 standards, Top 40 radio heavily leaned on R&B and Hip-Hop artists and music. A peak further down the Top 100 of 1994 turned up music from artists such as Salt-n-Peppa, R. Kelly, Coolio, and Warren G. This gave the pop-rock group Hootie & The Blowfish some struggles to find a mainstream radio format to embrace the band. Somehow, the Adult Contemporary format answered the call and immediately helped launch Hootie's career. Within 12 months, AC radio stations playlists featured four songs from Cracked Rear View (Hootie's debut album) as well as "I Go Blind" (prominently featured on the TV show Friends). Soon, Top 40 added Hootie's music--though most song charted higher on the Adult Contemporary Chart than the Hot 100--and the band's over-saturation likely attributed to its demise.

Ace of Base - "The Sign"

MISHEARD LYRICS:

When I first heard "The Sign" from Ace of Base, I incorrectly believed she was singing "I saw the sun and it opened up my eyes, I saw the sun."  Makes sense, right?  Well, no...it's actually "The Sign".  Duh.

Ace of Base - "Lucky Love"

Ace of Base mastered the art of creating songs that lasted just the right amount of time.  In the case of "Lucky Love", the tune clocked in at just under three minutes.

Ace of Base - "Cruel Summer"

Ace of Base is responsible for so many of the songs you hear on the radio today because today's artists grew up hearing to the Swedish Pop group on the radio.  Lady Gaga and Katy Perry are two such artists who credit Ace of Base as an influence on their sound.  As huge as Ace of Base was in the 1990's, the group simply could not sustain the international success they found--let's be real, no one could sustain that sort of worldwide success.  The group's second album after their breakthrough The Sign was Flowers.  Flowers yielded a hit in the form of a remake of Bananarama's pop hit "Cruel Summer".

Ace of Base - "Don't Turn Around"

Speaking of Tina Turner, I didn't realize that the piece of shit called "Don't Turn Around" actually belonged to her and not Ace of Base!  After hearing Tina's rendition, I think Ace of Base owes us all an apology.
