Jessica Simpson "Take My Breath Away"

You've finally seen it. Last week, the movie trailer for Top Gun: Maverick debuted even though the movie isn't scheduled to hit theaters until 2020. While the trailor featured some of the familiar faces and sounds as the original, it did not contain Kenny Loggins' "Highway to the Danger Zone" or Berlin's "Take My Breath Away" -- both songs were prominent in the original 1986 film. Did you forget Jessica Simpson also covered the ballad? She did so as an ode to her then-husband Nick Lachey in 2004.

Ashlee Simpson "Pieces of Me"

What we know about Ashlee Simpson:

  • Younger sister of Jessica Simpson
  • Had her own MTV series which was a spin-off from Nick and Jessica
  • Married and later divorced Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy
  • Danced a hoedown on Saturday Night Live when prerecorded vocals from "Pieces of You" played while she attempted to sing a different song -- the band transitioned back to "Pieces of You" when she exited the stage and SNL went to a commercial break

John Mayer - "Heartbreak Warfare"

The name John Mayer still meant something in 2009.  His bluesy ballad "Heartbreak Warfare" dominated the radio while tales from his personal life frequented the tabloids.  A year later, Mayer withdrew from the public eye following uproar from controversial interviews with Rolling Stone and Playboy Magazine.  In those candid interviews, Mayer dished on his sexual conquests with ladies such as Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson.  He also explained his disinterest in dating black women.  Following the flap, Mayer withdrew and refused to do interviews.

Jessica Simpson & Nick Lachey - "Where You Are"

As the calendar flipped to the year 2000, Jessica Simpson's career was in full-fledged superstar mode.  The second day of January saw Jessica's first duet with Nick Lachey, "Where You Are", debut on the charts.  What was next for Jessica and Nick?  Plenty including a reality TV show that painted Jessica as the second coming of Chrissy Snow.
