Simon & Garfunkel "Bridge Over Troubled Water"

"You might like this movie," my Dad said to me while folding laundry.

Noticing a war movie playing on our giant console television, I asked, "What's it called?"

"A Bridge Too Far," my dad responded.

The 1977 film highlighted the struggles of the Allies to break German lines during World War II. In other words, a film intended for mature audiences (I was probably 7 or 8 years old at the time, so I'm not sure why my Dad thought I'd like it).

Instead of going outside and playing, I sat down and watched all the while wondering why my dad believed I would like that particular movie. I gave it about 30 minutes before finally working up the courage to tell my dad that I didn't like the movie and wanted to go back outside to play.

Boz Scaggs "Lowdown"

Producers of Saturday Night Fever asked to use "Lowdown" from Boz Scaggs in their film, but his manager turned them down. Instead, the disco-tinged soft rock ditty turned up in the movie Looking for Mr. Goodbar.

Stevie Wonder "You Are the Sunshine of My Life"

Stevie Wonder gets all the credit for "You Are the Sunshine of My Life", yet his voice is actually the third you hear in the love song. Jim Gilstrap sings the first two lines of the song followed by Lani Groves on the next two. Then, around 45 seconds into the song (which is barely three minutes in length), we finally hear from Stevie. The song soared to #1 on the Hot 100 and Easy Listening/Adult Contemporary Charts in 1973.

Gino Vannelli "Living Inside Myself"

Gino Vannelli's "Living Inside Myself" encapsulates soft rock radio from 1981. One can only surmise the song played after this would be by Neil Diamond or perhaps Barbara Streisand.

Melissa Manchester - "Midnight Blue"

Chicago is getting a new oldies station--87.7 Me-TV-FM.  Their format will focus on music from the 60s and 70s that don't get the love from traditional oldies stations.  One such song could be "Midnight Blue", an easy-listening hit from Melissa Manchester that climbed to the #1 spot in 1975.

Little River Band - "Reminiscing"

In the fifth grade, I had to go to speech class in order to work on pronouncing my "L's".  A few weeks in, I decided to ditch speech class and never return because I believed I was too cool to play rousing games such as "Speech Bingo".  My parents had to sign all sorts of paperwork in order for me to stop attending these classes.  Years later, karma would take a giant bite out of my rear end when I was working in radio and referred to Little River Band as Wittle Liver Band while backselling their 1978 hit "Reminiscing".
