Celine Dion "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman"

Canadian music radio stations have to play at least 35% of Canadian-born artists between the hours of 6am and 6pm. It's true. It might also explain why certain Canadian crooners released songs that might be considered "deep cuts". In the case of Celine Dion, I'd include her 1995 take on Aretha Franklin's "A Natural Woman". Even though the song never matched the success of the the many predecessors who've belted out the R&B standard, Celine was merely warming up for 1997 when the Titanic Soundtrack would make her a household name -- plus it gave Canadian radio stations another song to hit their 35% quota.

Bryan Adams "Straight From the Heart"

Canadian rocker Bryan Adams make his first appearance on Adult Contemporary radio in 1983 with "Straight From the Heart".

Corey Hart "I Am By Your Side"

Corey Hart did more than wear his "Sunglasses at Night". The Canadian singer/songwriter also scored a handful of other hits including the ballads "Never Surrender" and "I Am By Your Side". The latter song was a Top 20 hit for Corey in 1986.

The Nylons "Kiss Him Goodbye"

The Canadian a cappella group The Nylons made their living covering oldies songs such as "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and "Happy Together". In the case of "Kiss Him Goodbye", the group took Steam's "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" and turned it into a #12 hit on the Hot 100 in 1987 (#10 on the Adult Contemporary Chart).

Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds - "Fallin' in Love"

What do Drake, LaBouche, and Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds have in common?  Hamilton, Joe Frank & Reynolds scored a #1 hit in 1975 with "Fallin' in Love".  Eurohouse group LaBouche later covered the song in 1995, and then in 2009 Canadian rapper Drake sampled the tune in "Best I Ever Had".

Sheriff - "When I'm With You"

The story of Sheriff is an odd and frustrating tale.  The Canadian rockers one hit single was the ballad "When I'm With You".  Originally released in 1983, the song was a mild hit in Canada (and even milder...lukewarm, really, in the States).  Frustrated over their lack of success, Sheriff broke up shortly afterward.  Then in 1988, a Minneapolis radio station started playing the song again causing other radio stations to follow suit.  A year later, Sheriff's record company re-released the song which caused the song to go to #1 in 1989...despite the band having broken up years prior.  The former Sheriff members had gone on to different projects, and refused to get the band back together.  A year later, two former Sheriff band mates found success with their new group Alias.  Their claim to fame is "More Than Words Can Say".

Tal Bachman - "She's So High"

No matter what happens in Tal Bachman's life, he will be able to say that he survived Y2K and did so in fine fashion.  The Canadian rocker produced the one-hit-wonder "She's So High"--a song that had nothing to do with drugs.  Instead, it's about a girl who's just so out of his league.  In the song, Bachman successfully cracked the code on how to include "Joan of Arc" into musical lyrics.

Glass Tiger - "Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)"

The Canadian rock band Glass Tiger called for reinforcements from a fellow Canadian rocker for their signature hit, "Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)".  Enter Bryan Adams--Canada's version of Michael McDonald--who came in to provide backing vocals on the tune thus allowing the world to let out a productive exhale as the song went all the way to #2 on the Hot 100 (#30 on the Adult Contemporary chart).

Nickelback - "Savin' Me"

Nickelback: the Canadian rock band that everyone wants to hate.  "Savin' Me" was a huge international hit in 2005, but only reached #29 on the Adult Contemporary Chart.

K.D. Lang - "Constant Craving"

Is that an accordion in the background of K.D. Lang's "Constant Craving"?  If not, then I liked the song for the wrong reason (because you hardly hear the accordion in music these days).  Singer K.D. Lang somehow combined being Canadian with being a successful country artist long before "Constant Craving" found mass appeal on Adult Contemporary stations during the summer of 1992.  And you know how most songs are hits in the UK before they are big in the States?  "Constant Craving" was just the opposite.  It was a mild hit over the pond before striking gold in the States causing the album to be re-released to the mother country in 1993.
