Bryan Adams & Barbara Streisand "I Finally Found Someone"

Largely absent on Adult Contemporary radio during in the '90s, Barbara Streisand elbowed her way back thanks to her duet with Bryan Adams. The pair teamed up for the sleepy ballad "I Finally Found Someone" on The Mirror Has Two Faces Soundtrack. While not exactly a toe-tapper, the tune hit #2 on the Adult Contemporary Charts and #8 on the Hot 100 Chart.

What happens when a couple goes to a high school dance as friends, has a good time and then the dude ignores the girl for the next five years? Well, that happened to me and my friend Mandy. We both went to a school dance during our sophomore year and then, for whatever reason, I stopped talking to her. I wasn't outwardly mean to her, I just sort of "moved on" and didn't really talk to her anymore. Today's kids might say, I "ghosted" her.

One of my New Year's resolutions in 1999 including apologizing to anyone who I felt I wronged while growing up. Mandy was one of the few people I vowed to locate and apologize for my behavior. By Christmastime 1999, time was running short to make good on my resolution so I decided to make that fateful phone call. Her sister answered the phone and showered me with attitude about why I was calling. "Wow," I thought, "I must have really been an ass to this girl...even her sister hates me!" Mandy's sister mentioned that Mandy was at the airport and would be home later that night. No problem. After asking her to let her know I called, I added that I would try again later. After a few hours passed, I picked up the phone and hit redial. Nope, she still wasn't home her sister begrudgingly informed me before quickly hanging up the phone.

My third attempt was successful if you classify getting Mandy on the phone as a success. After exchanging some pleasantries, I explained to Mandy why I was calling and then sought her forgiveness for being so mean to her after the beloved Winter Formal dance from 1993. Sounding caught off guard, Mandy quickly cut me off and said she had no recollection of me being mean and that there was no reason to apologize. She added that my constant phone calls had caused some issues with her husband (!) who wanted to know who this Todd guy was and why he kept calling. Yikes. Another apology came from me before I ended the phone call and concluded that maybe this wasn't a good idea after all.

Afterwards, my mom (who also found it odd that I wanted to do this) stood downstairs in our kitchen and questioned how the phone call went. After I retold the story, she laughed and said that Mandy probably thinks I'm in Alcoholics Anonymous or something because that's apparently one of the steps toward sobriety...you apologize to people who you've wronged. Now feeling embarrassed and ashamed, I tore up my New Year's resolution list of "people to call and apologize" and tried to forget about the whole thing. A few years later at my 10 year high school reunion, Mandy avoided me like the plague. The fact that I was drinking probably didn't help...

Celine Dion & Barbara Streisand "Tell Him"

Very few radio stations other than Adult Contemporary chose to play "Tell Him" from soft rock goddesses Celine Dion and Barbara Streisand. The sleepy ballad opens with Celine singing "I'm scared." -- sooooo you can probably guess why most stations didn't want to touch it. Despite the song headlining two queens of the soft rock genre, the song only peaked at #5 on the Adult Contemporary Chart in 1997-98.

Kenny Rogers with Kim Carnes & James Ingram "What About Me?"

The year 2017 saw Kenny Rogers wave goodbye to touring with the conclusion of his world farewell tour. Rogers remarkable career spans nearly 60 years...beginning with "That Crazy Feeling" in 1957. By the 1970s, Rogers etched his name in the history books as his music dominated the Country Music, Hot 100, and Adult Contemporary Charts. The list of artists connected to his 1984 hit "What About Me?" also spans multiple formats, genres and generations. Rogers originally enlisted Barbara Streisand and Lionel Richie to be part of the song, but both dropped out. Then came Jeffrey Osborne and Olivia Newton-John, who both had scheduling conflicts. Rogers settled on Kim Carnes and James Ingram, and the trio turned the ballad into Rogers final #1 hit on the Adult Contemporary Chart.

Gino Vannelli "Living Inside Myself"

Gino Vannelli's "Living Inside Myself" encapsulates soft rock radio from 1981. One can only surmise the song played after this would be by Neil Diamond or perhaps Barbara Streisand.

Why on earth would someone of a sterling pedigree such as Barbara Streisand team up actor Don Johnson (of Miami Vice fame) to record a duet?  The answer is easy: the two were dating at the time.

Barbara Streisand & Neil Diamond - "You Don't Bring Me Flowers"

The morning show I produced back in 2003 had the opportunity to interview Neil Diamond.  While we all knew of Neil Diamond, we really didn't know what to do with the interview.  The host of the show had an idea: the female co-host would do the interview solo but, after the interview, the host would ask Neil a series of questions that Neil would "ignore".  The gist of the bit would be that we received word before the interview that Neil Diamond didn't like the host and would refuse to answer any questions from him.  We taped the interview as planned and played it back.  What followed was an onslaught of Neil Diamond fans who emailed the station complaining about what we had done.  They claimed (falsely) that the interview was completely fabricated because Neil talked about the Cubs instead of the Red Sox (it was true--Neil did talk about the Cubs).  I can only imagine what these same fans did when Saturday Night Live did that Neil Diamond Behind The Music parody.
