Babyface "Whip Appeal"

Babyface met his future wife during auditions for the music video to his soulful "Whip Appeal". Tracey Edmonds wound up getting the chicken pox and couldn't take part in the video, but fate took over from there. Babyface later ran into her and the two eventually married in 1992. The couple later divorced in 2005 and, from there, Tracey entered into a "symbolic union" with Eddie Murphy in 2008, but split weeks later.

Anita Baker "Just Because"

Just before getting married on Christmas Eve 1988, Anita Baker's career was at an all-time high. She just scored her first #1 Pop Album, Giving You the Best That I Got. The album featured the title track, "Lead Me Into Love" and "Just Because".

Sixpence None the Richer "Kiss Me"

Sixpence None the Richer can send a thank you card to the folks behind She's All That, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and Dawson's Creek.  All three productions used the ballad "Kiss Me" and helped turn the song into a hit.  Heck, even the BBC used the song during its coverage of Prince Edward's royal wedding.  

Sister Sledge - "We Are Family"

Every time Sister Sledge's "We Are Family" plays, a wedding reception breaks out.

Kenny G - "Forever in Love"

Saturday nights during my high school years meant working as a busboy at a local banquet hall in Schererville, Indiana.  The hall consisted of three decent-sized rooms that usually played host to wedding receptions.  My evening started at 5pm with my first task being to fill carafes with wine and place them on all the tables.  During this time, each disc jockeys would set up and test their equipment.  This usually involved each DJ putting a CD into the player, pressing "play" and letting it run for the next hour while they walked around the room to do sound checks.  More often than not, the CD was "Forever in Love" by Kenny G.  It became an ongoing joke among the busboys that just as every DJ played "Celebration" by Kool And The Gang or "We Are Family" by Sister Sledge, they were also required to play Kenny G's CD during weddings (especially during dinner).  One particular night, I remember someone at one of the tables asking fellow busboy, Nick, if he knew what kind of wine was in the carafe.  Nick paused and said, "Cheap?".  

Norah Jones - "Come Away With Me"

A good friend of mine was getting married on a warm Saturday in October of 2005.  Since I was the best man and knew someone working on the air that morning in Chicago, I set up a special on-air "shout out" that morning.  I let my friend know that the shout-out was coming up in a matter of minutes, but he freaked out because he and his parents were dining at Sophia's Pancake House a few blocks from his parent's Indiana home.  He then jumped up from his seat at the restaurant and went to the manager who was working the cash register.  "Can you change the radio station?" he asked.  The look on the manager's face seemed to say "no" causing my friend to blurt out: "I'm getting married today and the DJ on 101.9 The Mix is about to play a song for us!".  The manager quickly changed the radio station and then asked all his pancake-loving patrons to be quiet.  Following Norah Jones' "Come Away With Me", my friend and all of Sophia's Pancake House in Highland, Indiana were treated to a little shout-out from my DJ friend Nikki.  I'm confident that could have been the best wedding gift that wasn't on their registry.    

Leann Rimes - "Can't Fight The Moonlight"

Five years ago today, my then-girlfriend's cousin got married and they threw a low-budget Thursday afternoon wedding (full disclosure: he is a veteran and it was Veteran's Day).  The budget-conscious couple asked me to DJ the wedding reception.  Although I worked in radio, I had never before DJ'd a wedding.  No worries, they assured me, they only had the reception hall until 8pm.  After the wedding got underway about 30 minutes late, the allotted time for dancing at the reception shrunk to about 70 minutes.  This amounted to being able to play about 20-25 songs.  The couple provided me with a list of song suggestion from a link on their wedding website where people could make requests.  Somehow Leann Rimes' "Can't Fight the Moonlight" was one of those requests.  Not only that, but that same person brought her CD that contained "Can't Fight The Moonlight" with her.  Given the tight playlist, I was never able to squeeze in the song at the reception.  At the conclusion of the event, I announced the final song (Guns 'n Roses "November Rain", by request of the bride & groom) and then was promptly booed.  I will never DJ another wedding.

Shania Twain - "From This Moment On"

Shania Twain originally wanted Elton John to perform the male portion of duet, "From This Moment On".  That didn't work out, so fellow country singer Bryan White stepped in and helped put this song on wedding reception soundtracks from 1998 onward.
