Jewel "You Were Meant for Me"

Jewel recorded two versions of "You Were Meant for Me" prior to this radio-friendly version. The third time was a charm for Jewel as the hushed ballad peaked at #1 on the Adult Contemporary Chart and #2 on the Hot 100, respectfully.

Kenny G "The Moment"

Adult Contemporary radio in 1996 continued its transformation from "safe" core artists such as Rod Stewart, Phil Collins, and Elton John as well as embracing newer contemporary artists like Sheryl Crow, Jewel, and Hootie & The Blowfish.  At that time, instrumentals on Adult Contemporary stations were considered a thing of the past that died along with the "beautiful music" format long popular in the 70s and 80s.  Somehow, the year 1996 proved to be an exception as three instrumentals found their way back on AC and Top 40 radio station: Robert Miles' "Children" and"Theme from Mission: Impossible" from Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. (of U2) joined Kenny G's "The Moment" with significant airplay on the radio.

Jewel - "Who Will Save Your Soul?"

Jewel found inspiration for her first hit, "Who Will Save Your Soul", after watching people on a train trip from Michigan to California and then as she hitchhiked into Tijuana.  She said it seemed like everyone she met was looking for somebody to save them.

Jewel - "Hands"

My final year of college featured many long drives between Bloomington, Indiana and my hometown of Schererville, Indiana.  On many of those drives up and/or down I-65, "Hands" from Jewel accompanied me.  Each time I hear the song, my brain can almost hear the whistling of the wind while speeding up (or down) I-65.  The song was a Top 10 hit for Jewel in 1998 and 1999.

Sarah McLachlan - "Adia"

Sheryl Crow, Natalie Merchant, Jewel, Sarah McLachlan and other Lilith Fair darlings took over Adult Contemporary radio stations in the late-1990s.  McLachlan's "Adia" was one of the most played songs of 1998.

Loreena McKennitt - "The Mummer's Dance"

During the late-1990s when women like Sarah McLachlan, Jewel, and Sheryl Crow took over contemporary music, Loreena McKennitt found success with a remixed version of "The Mummer's Dance".  Unique in its sound, "The Mummer's Dance" rose to #3 on the Adult Top 40 Chart.

Jewel - "Foolish Games"

Have you ever been in one of those relationships where you're totally into that person, but that person is simply in the "friend-zone" with you?  I did.  It lasted from about age 15 until 19.  This girl (who kinda looked like Jewel...but with better teeth) was my life.  She and I talked on the phone just about every day.  I listened to all her stories of the latest dude she was dating and how poorly this guy treated her.  Despite her constant pleads that the two of us "just be friends", I still asked her to Prom, Winter Formal, Homecoming, and every event in between.  She always said no, but in a way that made me feel like there was actually a chance.  She constantly told me that she loved me and that I understood her like no one else could.  I never thought that I would ever get over her.......until one day.  Something clicked in my brain, and I no longer saw her standing high up on this pedestal.  I was the one who put her there, so it was up to me to do something about it.  When I look back at all that time I wasted waiting, wanting, and hoping for someone to love me back, I realize how foolish it really was.

Jewel - "Standing Still"

We all know that before Jewel hit it big, she lived in a van down by the river somewhere in Alaska.  After making it big, Jewel's music were typically found in episodes of teen television dramas.  "Dawson's Creek" used many of Jewel's songs including the 2001 hit "Standing Still".
